Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC?

Since iOS 11 the iPhone camera uses HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) with the .heic extension because it stores the same quality in about half the space of JPG and supports features like Live Photos and HDR gain maps. Windows, many websites and older software still expect JPG, which is why conversion is so often needed.

How do I make my iPhone take JPG instead of HEIC?

Open Settings, tap Camera, then Formats, and choose "Most Compatible". New photos are saved as JPG (and videos as H.264). Existing photos stay HEIC. Alternatively, keep HEIC and turn on Settings › Photos › Transfer to Mac or PC › Automatic, which converts on transfer.
